Former Federal Prosecutor Jessica Aber Found Dead in Virginia Home

Jessica Aber, the former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, was found dead at her Alexandria home on Saturday morning, March 22, 2025. She was 43 years old. ​

Aber was appointed by President Joe Biden in October 2021 and served until January 2025, resigning following President Donald Trump's inauguration. Prior to her appointment as U.S. Attorney, she had a distinguished career as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia starting in 2009 and served as counsel to the Assistant Attorney General for the Criminal Division of the Department of Justice from 2015 to 2016. ​

The Alexandria Police Department is investigating the circumstances surrounding her death. Officers responded to a call about an unresponsive woman at Aber's residence and discovered her deceased upon arrival. The cause of death will be determined by the Virginia medical examiner's office. ​

Current U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, Erik Siebert, expressed profound grief, stating, "We are heartbroken beyond words to learn of the passing of our friend and former colleague, U.S. Attorney Jessica Aber. She was unmatched as a leader, mentor, and prosecutor ... ." ​

Attorney General Pamela Bondi also commented on Aber's passing, noting, "The loss of Jessica Aber, former U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of ... , is deeply tragic. Our hearts and prayers go out to her family and friends during this profoundly difficult time." ​

Aber's career was marked by her dedication to public service and her significant contributions to the justice system. Her sudden passing is a considerable loss to the legal community and all who knew her.
