Egg Prices in USA
Over the past year, egg prices in the United States have experienced significant volatility, primarily due to a severe outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI), commonly known as bird flu. This outbreak has led to the culling of millions of egg-laying hens, drastically reducing supply and driving prices upward.
In January 2024, the average cost for a dozen Grade A large eggs was approximately $2.15. By December 2024, this price had nearly doubled, reaching $4.15 per dozen.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that egg prices increased by 36.8% year-over-year in December 2024. Looking ahead, the USDA projects that retail egg prices could rise by an additional 20.3% in 2025, as HPAI continues to impact poultry populations.
Regionally, prices have varied, with states like Hawaii experiencing costs as high as $9.73 per dozen.
The combination of reduced supply due to HPAI and sustained consumer demand has led to these unprecedented price levels. Until the outbreak is controlled and egg-laying hen populations are restored, prices are expected to remain elevated.
