JCPenney Stores Closing

JCPenney has announced plans to close several stores across eight states by mid-2025. The company cites factors such as expiring lease agreements and market changes as reasons for these closures. These decisions are stated to be unrelated to JCPenney's recent merger with SPARC Group to form Catalyst Brands.

The affected locations include:

  • San Bruno, California: The Shops at Tanforan, closing on May 25, 2025.
  • Denver, Colorado: The Shops at Northfield.
  • Pocatello, Idaho: Pine Ridge Mall.
  • Topeka, Kansas: West Ridge Mall, closing by May 25, 2025.
  • Annapolis, Maryland: Annapolis Mall, closing by May 11, 2025.
  • Concord, North Carolina: Carolina Mall.
  • West Lebanon, New Hampshire: Upper Valley Plaza.
  • Charleston, West Virginia: Charleston Town Center, expected to close by May 2025.

These closures represent a small fraction of JCPenney's over 650 stores nationwide. The company emphasizes that it does not plan to significantly reduce its store count and remains committed to serving customers at its remaining locations and online.

The retail industry continues to face challenges, with increased competition from online retailers and changing consumer behaviors leading to numerous store closures across various chains.
