Today News-Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI

As of February 11, 2025, Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, is prominently featured in the news due to several significant developments:

Elon Musk's Bid to Acquire OpenAI

Elon Musk, along with a consortium of investors, has made a substantial offer of $97.4 billion to take control of OpenAI. Musk's stated intention is to steer OpenAI back to its original mission of safety-focused, open-source AI development, expressing concerns that the organization has shifted towards profit-driven objectives. Sam Altman promptly dismissed the offer, responding with a remark on X (formerly Twitter) that highlighted the decline in value of X under Musk’s ownership.

Advancements in AI Capabilities

OpenAI has recently introduced "Deep Research," an AI agent capable of performing complex tasks such as financial analysis and product comparisons. Within just nine days of its launch, Deep Research has begun handling 5% of economic tasks, marking a significant step toward artificial general intelligence (AGI). Altman estimates that AGI could emerge by the end of Donald Trump's second term in 2028 or even sooner. He acknowledges the transformative potential of such advancements while cautioning about possible societal disruptions. Altman advocates for the establishment of a global regulatory body, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency, to ensure the safe and equitable development of AI technologies.

Predictions on AI Accessibility and Economic Impact

Altman predicts that the cost of utilizing AI will decrease by a factor of ten annually, leading to increased accessibility and widespread adoption. He notes that the price per token for GPT-4 saw a significant reduction from early 2023 to mid-2024. Altman suggests that as AI becomes more affordable, it could lead to a decrease in the cost of many goods, while the prices of luxury items and limited resources like land may increase. He also highlights the importance of substantial investments in AI infrastructure, referencing the $500 billion Stargate Project announced by President Trump, which aims to advance AI and AGI development in the United States.
