History of D.C.’s Cherry Blossoms

  • In 1912, Japan gifted 3,020 cherry trees to the U.S. as a symbol of friendship.

  • First Lady Helen Taft and the Viscountess Chinda (wife of the Japanese ambassador) planted the first trees.

  • Today, over 3,700 cherry trees bloom each spring.
